Background

Various cycling-related clubs exist in Tynedale but until recently, there was no body or group that represented the interests of all cyclists in the Tyne Valley and wider area. Cycling is growing in popularity and now has a strong profile both nationally and internationally. The reasons to cycle have never been better known though still ignored by many including regional policy makers.

Committed Riding Mill cyclist Paul Goldsmith felt strongly that there should be a voice to speak up for cycling in the Tyne Valley area and invited Hexham based cycling development specialist Ted Liddle, to join him to form a local cycling group for just this purpose.                                                                                                                           

Cycling Tynedale was formed in October 2012 in conjunction with Transition Tynedale https://blog.transitiontynedale.org/ to take on this role and is asking cyclists of all ages and abilities who live and or who cycle in the Tyne Valley and wider area to register their support of this new group. 

Cycling Tynedale will be so much more effective if represents the interest of a sizeable body of cyclists. Whether your body is sizeable or not – everyone is very welcome to become a supporter of Cycling Tynedale.

Next steps

In the first instance, all Tynedale area cyclists are being asked to register their support by emailing info@transitiontynedale.org with their name and phone number and the cycling group organisers will make contact. The more people that register their support, the greater the influence the group will be able to have on cycling matters in the Tyne Valley and wider area. Yes, cycling matters.

Progress

19 people attended the inauguration in October and since then 121 cyclists have registered their support. A core group of 15 supporters chose the name Cycling Tynedale at the November meeting and discussed how best to use the energy and undoubted commitment of its core participants to improve cycling facilities, conditions and opportunities in the Tyne Valley and wider area.
